《夜のカフェテラス》（The Cafe Terrace on the Place du Forum）は、1888年9月半ばにフランスのアルルで描かれた。

本作品にサインはされていないが、3つの手紙によってゴッホの作品であることが述べられている。また、大きな筆で描かれた同作品の構成も彼の邸宅にある。

南仏アルルのカフェ

本作は、ゴッホが1888年2月から滞在した南仏の町アルルの旧市街中央にあるプラス・デュ・フォルム広場に面した、比較的裕福な階級層向けのカフェテラスの情景を描いた作品である。

彼は、南に面している人気喫茶店のテラスと、ル・ドゥ・パレから教会の塔（現在はラピデール博物館）へと連なる建造物（絵の左側）、その前にある建物の灯りを描いた。ヴァン・ゴッホは、この場所を囲んでいる木の枝と店の灯りを幻想的に描いたが、店のすぐ横にあるローマの記念碑跡は省いた。

モデルになったカフェは「カフェ・ヴァン・ゴッホ」という名で現存している。また、ゴッホが画架を置いたプラス・デュ・フォルム広場の北東角には、今も画架がセットされている。

深い青色の夜空

画面左側には、当時の文明の発展を象徴するガス灯の黄色の光に照らされるカフェが描写され、右側と前景にはカフェへと続く石畳、そして一本の杉が描かれている。上部には窓から光の漏れる薄暗い旧市街の町並みと、青の印象的な夜空が配されている。

また本作で描かれた景色は、カフェ・ヴァン・ゴッホを中心にほぼそのまま残っているが、通りの奥に見える教会の塔は、現在は残っていない。

この夜空は黒色を使用せずに黄色と深い青色で描かれていて、ゴッホが本作で取り組んだ最も重要な要素の一つである。

ゴッホによる作品評

妹ヴィル・ファン・ゴッホ（Willemina Jacoba van Gogh/1862-1941）に宛てた手紙では以下のように記されている。

「私はいま描いている作品《夜のカフェテラス》にただ夢中だ。テラスには、人が飲んでいる姿が見える。巨大な黄色いランプが、店の正面やテラス、歩道、道路を照らしている。

切り妻造りの家々は、星が散りばめられた青い空の下の道が暗がりへ続くように、暗い青やすみれ色、そして緑色の木が配されている。美しい青、すみれ色、緑、周辺は淡い黄色と淡黄色の緑を用いた。この夜の絵には黒は使われていない。

特別なことをせずとも、美しい青やスミレ色、緑が周囲の場所をシトロングリーンと薄い黄色、黄緑色へと彩っている。夜のライトスポットを描くことは、非常に楽しい時間だ。普段は下絵を描いてから昼間に作品を描くが、すぐに筆を執ってしまった。

本作品が初めて展示された1891年、《夜のカフェテラス》は「夕方の喫茶店」と題された。本作品は、ゴッホがはじめて多数の星が散りばめられた夜空を描いた絵画だったが、当初は「夕方」を描いたものとされたのだ。

その後のゴッホは、《ローヌ川の星月夜》や翌年の《星月夜》など、星空を描いた多くの著名な作品を生み出した。ゴッホは他にも、《ウジェーヌ・ボックの肖像》の背景にも星明かりを描いている。
